LIGHT IT RIGHT: 10 TIPS FOR SELECTING THE PERFECT LIGHTING FOR YOUR SPACE

Choosing the right lighting is essential for creating the perfect atmosphere and enhancing functionality. Here are some key things to consider when selecting lighting for your space:

1. Purpose of the space

Determine how each area will be used. For example, bright task lighting is essential in kitchens and workspaces, so you should consider a mix of both pendant lights and can lighting, like in the kitchen above featuring our Rynn Pendants. In bedrooms and other calm environments, softer lighting is better suited.  Sconces and lamp lighting are both good considerations in these spaces.

2. Layered Lighting

Incorporate a mix of ambient, task and accent lighting. Layering different types of lighting creates depth and enhances the functionality of the space.  The space below features a mix of overhead lighting, pendants, lamps and art lighting to enhance the space and give it character and depth.

3. Fixture Size

Choose lighting fixtures that are appropriately designed for the space. Fixtures that are too large or too small can disrupt the balance and overall aesthetics of the area. Cordero is well versed in determining the right size fixture for your space.

Take a look at the chart below to help you determine what size pendants to use over a kitchen island. You can read more about sizing on the blog here, or schedule a free design consultation with one of our designers.

4. Dimmers

Consider installing dimmer switches to allow for adjustable lighting levels. This flexibility helps create different moods and accommodates various activities.

5. Natural Light

Assess how much natural light the space receives throughout the day. This will help you select complementary artificial lighting that enhances the overall ambiance.

6. Color Temperature

Choose the right color temperature for the intended mood. Warmer tones (2700K-3000K) create a cozy atmosphere, while cooler tones (4000K-5000K) promote alertness and productivity. Take a look at the chart below to help decide what lightbulb will work best in your space.

7. Aesthetics vs. Functionality

While style is important, ensure that your chosen fixtures provide the adequate lighting for the intended use of the space.  In the kitchen below, adequate task lighting is achieved with a mixture of well spaced pendant lights, sconces and can lighting.  This space is both beautiful and functional.

8. Maintenance

Consider the ease of cleaning and maintaining the fixtures. Cordero will always provide proper cleaning instructions with every fixture.

9. Fixture Placement

Plan the layout of your lights carefully, to avoid shadows or glare.  Proper placement is crucial for effective illumination.

10. Safety Codes

Lastly, ensure compliance with safety codes, particularly in areas where moisture is present, like bathrooms and outdoors. This is important for preventing electrical hazards.  All of Cordero’s light fixtures can be converted to damp rated fixtures to withstand moisture and condensation.

It is essential to consult with a qualified electrician before implementing any lighting design, as electrical work should always be performed by a licensed professional.
